Changing your dog's food Transitioning to a new food, whether from one brand to another or from dry food to canned food, Barf, or cooked food, should take place over 14 to 21 days. Every food has a different composition of ingredients, is processed differently, and requires different enzymes and digestive juices for digestion. When we change the diet, the digestive environment must adjust, which takes the aforementioned 2-3 weeks. If the transition to the new food occurs too quickly, the dog usually has diarrhea, cannot digest the new food right away, and does not get nutrients from it.
